A Sentimental Journey – concert in support of Pavlina’s studies in Venice

On Saturday, August 17th, 2024, the historic St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church in Perth hosted an enchanting programme of music that captured the hearts of a full-capacity audience. The concert, presented by the Jambouree Cabaret Singers and masterfully directed from the piano by the talented Edna Auld, was aptly titled “Sentimental Journey.” It lived up to its name, taking the listeners on a musical voyage through time, filled with nostalgia and the rich emotions that only great music can evoke.

The program was a delightful blend of Italian opera, traditional songs, beloved numbers from the world of musical theatre, and timeless love songs. The evening was beautifully compered by Alan Laing, whose warm and engaging presence added a personal touch to the event, making the audience feel like part of a shared musical adventure.

The concert featured stunning performances by three of Perth’s finest vocal talents: Kenneth Maciver (bass), David Thomson (tenor), and Pavlina Ivanova (soprano). Each singer brought their unique strengths to the program, creating moments of both solo brilliance and harmonious ensemble singing that filled the church.

Kenneth Maciver’s deep, sonorous bass was a highlight of the evening, providing a rich foundation in the operatic selections. His interpretation of classic Italian arias was both powerful and moving, capturing the drama and intensity of the pieces with impressive skill.

David Thomson’s tenor soared with clarity and passion, particularly in the traditional songs and musical theatre numbers. His voice, full of warmth and expressiveness, brought a touching sincerity to the love songs that were woven throughout the evening’s program.

The star, however, was undoubtedly Pavlina Ivanova. The soprano’s performance was not only a showcase of her technical prowess but also a deeply emotional journey that resonated with the audience. Ivanova’s ability to convey both the grandeur of opera and the intimacy of more contemporary songs demonstrated her versatility and artistic maturity. This concert was a testament to her talent and a fitting send-off as she prepares to continue her studies at the prestigious Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. Her journey from her beginnings with the Perth-based choir to this exciting new chapter in her life was a poignant narrative that added an extra layer of sentimentality to the evening.

The choice of repertoire was carefully curated to reflect the theme of a ‘Sentimental Journey,’ with each piece evoking memories, emotions, and stories of love and longing. The singers, under Edna’s sensitive direction, delivered each piece with precision and passion, making for an unforgettable experience.

In addition to the musical excellence on display, the concert had a charitable purpose, raising funds to support Pavlina’s studies in Venice. This added a layer of community spirit to the event, as the audience was not only entertained but also given the opportunity to contribute to the future of a rising star.

Overall, the Jambouree Cabaret Singers, led by Edna Auld and Alan Laing, offered a concert that was more than just a performance; it was a heartfelt journey through music that touched the souls of all who were present. St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church provided the perfect setting for this afternoon of nostalgia and hope, leaving the audience with lingering melodies and the sense that they had been part of something truly special.
