A Delightful Musical Evening: Jambouree Singers’ ‘Kaleidoscope of Music’
On Sunday, 2nd June 2024, St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields in Perth was transformed into a vibrant mosaic of sound and emotion, thanks to the Jambouree Singers’ enchanting performance, ‘Kaleidoscope of Music.’ Under the expert direction of Edna Auld, the evening was a celebration of choral harmony, featuring not only the seasoned voices of the Jambouree Singers but also the youthful exuberance of the Jambouree Juniors and several outstanding soloists from both choirs.
The concert commenced with an uplifting Zip a Dee Doo Dah that set the tone. The Jambouree Singers showcased their versatility, effortlessly navigating through a diverse repertoire that spanned classical masterpieces, contemporary hits, and traditional folk songs. Each piece was delivered with precision and emotional depth, highlighting the choir’s ability to convey a wide range of sentiments through their music.
A particularly charming aspect of the evening was the performance by the Jambouree Juniors. These young talents brought a fresh energy to the stage, their enthusiasm and clear, bright voices adding a delightful contrast to the more mature tones of the main choir. Their rendition of classic and modern tunes was met with warm applause, showcasing not only their potential but also the effective mentorship of Edna Auld.
The soloists of the evening were nothing short of spectacular. Pavlina Ivanova, David Thomson, Fiona Brownsmith, Teenah Bee, Shannon Mckinney, Bill and Sarah Millar, Ali Macqueen – each brought their unique style and interpretation to the forefront, enhancing the overall tapestry of the performance. Their solos were well-chosen, complementing the choir pieces while allowing each soloist a moment to shine. From poignant ballads to dynamic arias, these performances were met with enthusiastic appreciation from the audience.
Teenah, Titania, Tanya and Eleanor’s voices blended beautifully in a rendition of Mr Sandman, telling the story of a mythical character in European folklore who puts people to sleep and encourages and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes.
Edna Auld’s direction was evident throughout the evening. Her careful attention to detail and her passion for choral music were reflected in the flawless execution and emotional resonance of each piece. She managed to bring out the best in both the seasoned singers and the budding talents, creating a harmonious blend that resonated with the audience.
The venue itself, St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields, provided a perfect backdrop for the evening’s festivities. Its acoustics amplified the rich sounds of the choir, and its serene ambiance enhanced the overall experience. The interplay of light and shadow within the church added a visual dimension to the kaleidoscope theme, making the performance not only a feast for the ears but also a treat for the eyes.
